News Product Nokia

Nokia said today it would receive an up-front payment and royalties from Blackberry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) for use of its wireless technology patents.

Nokia said RIM has renewed a multi-year patent license agreement with it, but declined to comment on the size of the payments.

The deal covers use of GSM, WCDMA and CDMA2000 patents.

"Today's announcement demonstrates the success of Nokia's increased focus on patent out-licensing" said Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia's Vice President in charge of intellectual property rights. "This agreement confirms Nokia's leading role in developing key technologies and the value of our patent assets."

Earlier this year Nokia settled a long patent battle with mobile chipmaker Qualcomm, agreeing on a 15-year deal which included a one-time payment of $2.2 billion

Nokia 6260

Not one to be out of the gadget spotlight for too long, Finnish manufacturing giant Nokia Corp. has added its new Nokia 6260 handset to the Samsung Omnia and HTC Touch Pro smartphones offered up this week by Verizon Wireless.

While most smartphones are generally pushed towards the business community, the Nokia 6260 is described as also being well suited for those people who simply use their mobile phones “to share their lives with friends and family.”

Arriving as a slide-format phone equipped with “lightning-fast” 3G technology through both Wi-Fi and Cellular connectivity, the Nokia 6260's performance is bolstered by high-speed upload packet access (HSUPA) and high-speed download packet access (HSDPA).

Providing quick and easy access to online search engines and points of interest directly from its home screen, the 6260 handset includes Nokia's new 360° navi-key, which is said to provide users with “a great mobile Internet experience.”

Helping to support and expand that claim, the 6260 comes powered by the Symbian operating system and also includes access to a range of Nokia-branded Ovi services, an integrated 5.0 mega pixel Carl Zeiss digital camera, and an on-board music player.

Other features include GPS assistance (aGPS) coupled with Nokia Maps – a first-time addition for Nokia's popular Series 40 software platform – Bluetooth 2.1 (with A2DP) connectivity, a high-resolution 2.4-inch VGA display screen (320 x 480), 200MBs of internal memory, expansion for up to 8GBs via a microSD card slot, and an FM tuner.

Comfortably styled for the palm of the hand, the Nokia 6260 slider is a respectable 15.4mm in thickness and weighs in at an equally consumer-friendly 114g. In terms of operational longevity, Nokia has outlined that (3G) talk time will stretch up to four hours, while standby time will reach as high as 400 hours.

Expected to hit retail stores in the early part of 2009, the new Nokia 6260 slide will come with a recommended price of 299.99 Euros before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia e63

Nokia today announced the Nokia E63, a QWERTY keyboard messaging phone designed for business users.

The E63 can switch modes with the press of a button, from viewing corporate mail, appointments and intranet data, to viewing pictures, personal email and shortcuts to favorite websites.

Consumers can record and view photos and videos with the 2.0-megapixel CMOS camera and bright 320 x 240 px landscape display, listen to music downloaded from the Nokia Music Store via a 3.5 mm audio jack, or customize the handset through the thousands of applications available for download.

Files on Ovi lets users remotely access files from their PC, even when their computer is offline.

"Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President of Nokia. "The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network."

The Nokia E63 will be available in ruby red or ultramarine blue. It is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of $250.
